Gajgamini

social Causes

In his autobiography, Nanjibhai Kalidas Mehta, the founder of the Group, writes-

"My greatest joy was in business. But money was not the end, but the means to a better, kinder life. Commerce was a field where I could seek the means for being charitable to the brethren whose love had blessed me".

This concern for society begins, naturally, at home, and the Group has always looked after its employees in every way. It provides them with medical and educational facilities, and in some cases goes further, to provide the entire surrounding community with facilities such as schools, hospitals, good roads, clean water supply, sports facilities and scholarships.

The Mehta Group is especially proud of its public service project 'Arya Kanya Gurukul Girls School' in Porbandar. Set up in 1937, the school was a brave new experiment in women's education, combining a modern outlook with the spirit of Vedic times, and thus synthesizing the best of East and West.

The enrollment to the Gurukul is without any distinction of caste, creed or religion. Girls from devout Muslim families and Christian native girls from Africa have also been trained at the Gurukul.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium - the first to be built in Western India - was established by the Founder, who always kept pace with technological developments.

Nanjibhai's homage to the Father of the Nation culminated in the erection of Kirti Mandir, a monument in memory of Gandhiji built over his birthplace in Porbandar. ( See Photo Gallery Section )

In Africa, Arya Girls School at Nairobi, Kampala and Mombasa; Town Hall, Mehta Library and Jubilee Park at Kampala, Arya Samaj Mandir at Dar-es-Salaam, Women's Association Hall etc. bear testimony to the contribution of our founder Nanjibhai Kalidas Mehta. (See Photo Gallery Section)

Our North American unit Monarch Plastics makes contributions to various charitable Organizations including The Cancer Society & Mother Against Drinking & Driving (MADD).

Monarch Plastics was given a "Recognition Plaque" by United Way for the money raised by the Company and the employees together. This efforts continue in the year 2000 and we hope to beat last year's record.
